Honoring the LafargeHolcim Awards Next Generation prize winners from around the world

“Being part of the generation that knows that all actions have consequences, preserving natural resources is a given in any project,” writes Emmanuelle Borne, Editor in Chief of L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui (AA). Edwin Heathcote, architecture critic of the Financial Times, states that “30 years is really very young for an architect,” and talks about a “positive naivety” of their work. Pritzker Prize for Architecture laureate Alejandro Aravena believes that “finding a balance between becoming an expert and remaining an informed citizen” is the greatest challenge and strength of today’s students and young practitioners. These thoughts and much more are to be found in the enclosed special issue of AA, which is dedicated to the 21 prizewinning projects and their authors in the Next Generation category (less than 30 years of age)of the LafargeHolcim Awards for projects and visions in sustainable construction. The projects are grouped by focal theme: sustainable solutions, local economy & technology, design for all, and innovative engineering. In addition, former Next Generation winners explain what recognition in the Awards competition has meant to them and their professional pursuits. “We need the brightest young people to become material scientists,” says Michael Braungart, co-author of Cradle to Cradle. Architect and activist Anna Heringer discusses the “power of architecture.” Architect Francis Kéré reminds us that “there is no one-size-fits-all” when it comes to sustainable architecture, and structural engineer Philippe Block motivates young professionals to “use materials in the way they want to work.” Contributions by Maria Atkinson, Chair of the LafargeHolcim Foundation (“seeing around corners to understand what is needed for the built environment to be sustainable”), Marilyne Andersen, Head of the Academic Committee of the Foundation (“giving the next generation an opportunity for crazy ideas and much freer concepts”), and Magali Anderson, Chief Sustainability and Innovation Officer of LafargeHolcim (“trying to find the Tesla of cement”), round out the publication honoring the next generation of professionals who are shaping the future of design and construction in line with the goals of the LafargeHolcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction.
